More foreign non-governmental organizations join COP29 NGO Coalition

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 31. Nine more foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from 15 countries joined the COP29 NGO Coalition, Trend reports.

On July 29, the second hybrid meeting of the COP29 NGO Coalition was held via the Zoom platform.

At the meeting, extensive discussions on inclusiveness took place between representatives of both foreign and local civil society organizations. The Azerbaijan National NGO Forum organized the event, which featured UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Azerbaijan Nigar Arpadarai and Youth Climate Champion for COP29 Leyla Hasanova as guests who answered questions from attendees.

The COP29 NGO Coalition currently includes 123 foreign NGOs from 39 countries. Local NGOs are represented by the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum, which serves as the national umbrella organization within the coalition.

Ramil Iskandarli, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum, noted that foreign NGOs from countries such as Norway, Spain, Romania, and Sri Lanka have recently joined the coalition.

“Applications keep coming in. In our opinion, this is a very unique platform.

The coalition also includes 39 NGOs from nine like-minded constituencies, which bring together NGOs with observer status at the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change,” he said.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP – the Conference of the Parties – is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
